A celebrated example of early modernist design, this set of four René Herbst Sandow armchairs showcases the designer’s pioneering use of industrial materials and streamlined construction. Originally conceived in the late 1920s, the iconic design features a polished chrome tubular steel frame paired with tightly stretched black elastic Sandow cords that form the seat and back, creating a striking balance of visual lightness and ergonomic comfort. Inspired by the functionality of industrial materials, Herbst’s innovative approach transformed simple elastic cords into a flexible seating surface that adapts naturally to the body. The chairs are in good condition although have some signs of wear due to age. The chairs measure at 31.75 inches in height, 16.5 inches in width and 19.5 inches in depth. Additional measurements are the seat height at 18 inches, a seat width of 16.5 inches and seat depth of 16.5 inches as well.
